Packing for a holiday can be quite stressful, as you have to balance taking enough clothes and toiletries while fitting it all in your suitcase.

If you are taking both hand luggage and a suitcase you are going to check in at the airport, you might start packing most things in your suitcase so you don’t have to carry it around with you.

There are a few things that you should not pack in your suitcase that you might not expect alongside the usual flammable items and chemicals.

Passengers have been told not to bring these five things in their checked luggage.

What should I not take in checked luggage?

Swimwear

Sometimes luggage might not arrive at your destination at the same time as you because it has been misdirected and will eventually be returned to you.

While you wait for your bag, you might want to have a few essential items with you in your hand luggage, such as swimwear.

If your suitcase is delayed, you have some swimwear already on you to enjoy some time on the beach.

Phone charger and adapter

As you are likely to be running out of charge when you arrive at your hotel, it is a good idea to have your charger and adapter easily available to you.

Having your charger in your hand luggage makes it easier to find than having to go through your entire suitcase.

Valuable items

Valuable items like watches, jewellery, and cash might not be covered by your travel insurance, so it is better to keep them on you rather than risk them being taken or if your suitcase gets lost.

There is also a risk of them getting damaged during transit.

Medication

Prescription medication is less likely to get lost if you keep it in your hand luggage.

If you are waiting a few days to get your suitcase, you will still have some of your medication on you and won’t need to worry.

Electronics

Items with lithium batteries like vapes and power banks should not be put in checked luggage because they could catch on fire.

Different airlines have varying restrictions on how many electronic devices you can take onboard with you so it is worth checking the specific restrictions for your airline.
