BULLISH Frankie Bunn loved denying TV audiences the upset they craved.

Oldham sealed their progress into the second round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win at non-league Hampton and Richmond Borough on Monday but they did it the hard way, Rob Hunt and Callum Lang scoring late on to flip the tie on its head.

They did so in front of the BT Sport cameras and the Latics boss was thrilled with the last-gasp twist his team provided to avoid becoming a major scalp.

“We all knew why the cameras were here,” said Bunn, whose side will go to Maidstone United in the second round.

“They nearly got what they wanted, those headlines, and I'm just grateful to be in the hat for the next round.

“We kept plugging away. We always had momentum. We were always searching for the goals to get back into the game and frankly, we got them.

“They've got nothing to lose. We've got nothing to win. There were a lot of shocks this weekend and we overcame a bit of adversity again with the referee's decision, and goals can change games, and it nearly cost us.

“The officials have to start getting these decisions right. We've been amongst games in League Two where decisions have cost us and the letter have been written, saying: 'yeah, you were right' and we just need better officiating.”

Early on, Jose Baxter expertly dropped the shoulder on Rian Bray and slid in Cameron Dummigan but the Latics man's powerful effort was finger-tipped over the bar by Hampton goalie Tom Lovelock.

Then, in the 14th minute, the hosts' moment of glory arrived, full-back Tyrell Miller-Rodney ghosting past Lang and going to ground as he was tugged back.

Referee Tom Nield pointed to the spot and Chris Dickson slotted home past Daniel Iversen to take the proverbial roof off the Beveree Stadium.

As Oldham looked to return to calmer waters, Ishmael Miller saw a rasping strike beaten away by Lovelock.

Then, Lang almost made up for his penalty concession, Lovelock forced to claw the ball off the line after a shot from the Latics wideman had rolled against the upright.

At the other end, Zak Joseph had Iversen scrambling with a low, left-footed attempt.

Midway through the half, it looked as though Baxter had earned the Latics a spot-kick as he tumbled to the ground after Lovelock raced to meet him but he was booked for simulation.

The hosts came close to a second when Casey Maclaren rose highest and nodded inches wide at the far post while Iversen was forced to charge down a Joseph strike.

Not long before half time, Oldham skipper Peter Clarke let the Beavers off the hook, putting a free header wide of the mark and there was still time for Rian Bray to bravely fling himself in front of Baxter's goalbound effort.

Baxter was forced off on a stretcher early in the second half, the forward stricken after he was challenged by Bray in the area and when the action resumed, Hampton's Joseph nearly stole all of the limelight, breezing past two challenges before slamming a left-footed effort not far wide.

The hosts' Mambo nodded a Lang header off the line and late in the day, Bunn's troops saved their bacon.

From a Beavers' free kick, Dan Gardner embarked on a surging run from deep and crossed for Hunt to sweep home the equaliser and then, in added time, Lang turned his marker in the box and slammed into the net to seal Oldham's progress.
