WINGER Kyran Johnson could be out for up to 10 weeks with a broken jaw if Oldham’s fears about the injury are confirmed by hospital X-rays.

After playing well and setting up at least one of the Roughyeds’ nine tries in a 52-12 win at Keighley Cougars, ‘Johno’ rose high to collect a restart kick in the second half and fell to the ground clutching his face.

It was confirmed after the match he had gone to hospital and head coach Scott Naylor was convinced the former Featherstone Rovers utility back could be out for two-and-a-half months.

“I’d like to know what we’ve done to deserve all the bad news we’re getting about our wingers,” said the Oldham boss.

In the last two or three weeks he’s seen Lee Kershaw recalled from his loan spell by his full-time employers Wakefield Trinity; Aaron Jones-Bishop ruled out for the rest of the season because of a serious knee injury; and now Johnson sidelined for a few weeks with a fractured jaw.

The Johnson blow, however, was the only ‘nasty’ from Cougar Park where Roughyeds piled on the points to consolidate their third position in Betfred League 1.

Commenting on a fourth win in a row, he said: “I’m delighted with the score because Keighley are gritty, tough and a side that gives 100 per cent.

“You can see that from their attitude. We had to match their energy. determination and effort before we could do anything and I’m happy to say we did that and a lot more besides.

“We put ourselves in a position to score points and we scored some outstanding tries.

“We spoke at half-time about how we could be more dominant in the second half and I was really pleased at the way we performed on a ground where our record hasn’t been at all good in the last few years.”
