KYRAN Johnson, who suffered a broken jaw at Keighley seven weeks ago, is back in full training and may be considered for Oldham RL Club’s key clash with North Wales Crusaders at the Vestacare Stadium on Sunday (3pm kick-off).

The young Yorkshireman, who plays as a full-back or winger, provides coach Scott Naylor with some rare good news on the injury front at a time when he has had several players nursing knocks of one kind or another.

Each of the 17 who were on duty in last Sunday’s 16-10 defeat in the top-of-the-table clash at Whitehaven came through unscathed.

Of those who didn’t play at the Recreation Ground, Johnson has the best chance of returning to the scene, although Naylor has not ruled out players like Paul Crook, Ben Calland, Ben Davies and Anthony Bowman.

“I’m banking on having a few more players to choose from,” said Naylor, who will be anxiously waiting for the results of scans on Bowman and Davies while waiting also to see how Calland’s damaged toe reacts to a tough test when they report for training tonight.

The only player definitely ruled out is long-standing injury victim Aaron Jones-Bishop, who will not play again this season because of a serious knee injury.

Naylor wasn’t impressed with how his troops fared in last Sunday’s top-two loss in Cumbria, but he is hoping for a positive reaction this weekend.

He said: “We should have been top now, instead of third, but I’m hoping it will make a difference this week, having more players from which to choose.”

Although just outside the play-offs. Crusaders are one of the form teams of the division, having won their last three games against Whitehaven, Keighley and Workington.

They have three or four former Oldham players in their ranks, among them Steve Roper, Kenny Hughes, Dave Eccleston and Matty Reid, but clever hooker Hughes is serving a two-match ban and won’t be available.

A win would lift Roughyeds back to second place with five games left of the regular season.
