TOM Hamer says he didn’t have to think twice about extending his Latics contract.

The promising defender has put pen to paper for a further two years – tying him to the club until the summer of 2022.

The 19-year-old made 35 appearances in all competitions last season scoring twice in January - in the win over Notts County and the defeat at MK Dons.

With his previous deal set to run out at the end of the coming campaign, Hamer is happy to have got his future sorted.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, it’s a club where I’ve been for pretty much all my career as a professional and through the youth academy.” he said.

“I didn’t really have to think about it, I’ve played a lot of games and at my age that’s a good thing to have done early in my career.

“I played 35 games last season and as a 19-year-old that’s the best thing that you can be doing in first team football. It was an easy decision.”

Hamer broke through as Latics were relegated from League One in 2017/18 campaign and was then part of a squad that saw their play-off hopes fade last time around as they looked to make an immediate return to the third tier.

Now heading into a new campaign and with a fresh regime under Frenchman Laurent Banide, the teenager is clear in what he wants to achieve on both a personal and collective level.

“Last season didn’t go how we want, that’s why we’re going to push for promotion this year, but my target is to get as many games as I can and maybe some more assists and goals,” he said.

“I think that the more games that I play the more experience I’ll get and the better I’ll become as a footballer which is the main thing.

“I’ll try and get as many games as I can which will boost my confidence up on and off the pitch and I'll see where it goes from there.”

Hamer has made 44 appearances for the club in total, finding the back of the net three times.

He was on target of the final day of the campaign in a 2-2 draw at Northampton as Latics dropped into League Two before his two goals last season.

Midfielder Mohamed Maouche has also signed a new deal with Oldham in recent weeks, the Frenchman penning a one-year contract.
