Oldham Athletic have completed the signing of former Burton Albion defender Tomas Egert.

The 24-year-old, from the Czech Republic, has signed a one-year contract with the option of a further year.

Egert made three substitute appearances for the Brewers at the tail end of the 2017-18 season but having been invited back to train with Nigel Clough’s side at the end of the campaign was not offered a new deal that summer, the Burton boss citing budget constraints.

The centre back then went on trial with clubs including Bradford and Grimsby and turned down offers in Holland and the Middle East only for a serious knee injury to keep him out for the whole of the 2018-19 campaign.

The central defender has been training with Latics throughout the summer but has yet to feature in pre-season as he continues his recovery.

Egert began his career with Slovan Liberec, having several loan spells in his homeland before moving to England.
