DAVID Wheater has completed his move to Oldham Athletic.

The out of contract former Bolton defender had been back training with crisis club Wanderers, waiting on the prospect of a new deal.

But with the wait for Football Ventures to complete their takeover of the Whites on-going, Wheater elected to look elsewhere.

Latics have been linked with the defender for several weeks only for an extension to his stay at the University of Bolton Stadium to look likely.

But now the former Middlesbrough man, 32, is set to bring plenty of experience to Laurent Banide's backline having signed a one-year deal with an option.

Wheater began his career with the Teesiders and spent seven years with the club and made 140 appearances, scoring nine goals.

Last season, Wheater played 33 games in the Championship having been named Bolton's player of the season in the 2016/17 campaign, the defender also selected in the League One team of the season that year.

Latics open the new League Two season at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.
