OLDHAM Athletic beat Liverpool U21’s 3-2 in the first game of the Leasing.com Trophy at Boundary Park tonight for their first competitive win under new boss Laurent Banide.

It only took four minutes for the visitors to take the lead when Alex Iacovitti's clearance went to Neco Williams who produced a fine volley into the top corner.

Oldham found in the equaliser in the 21st minute through Desire Segbe Azankpo's composed lob.

On the 29th minute, Latics then went ahead when Chris Eagles's free kick from out wide into the box saw Iacovitti head home.

But it was all square again just before half time when Elliot Harvey tapped it into an empty net for the young Liverpool side.

After a less frenetic second period, Latics found the winner in the 81st minute from a Gevaro Nepomuceno corner, Jamie Stott heading home to seal the win in the group opener.

Attendance: 1,522 (183 away).
