OLDHAM’S EFL Trophy campaign ended with a heavy defeat at Fleetwood.
Latics went down 5-2 to Joey Barton’s side at Highbury meaning they finished third in Group B and missed out on a place in the knockout stages as the hosts joined Accrington in the next round.
The game was all but over after a shocking start on the Fylde coast, the home side 3-0 up inside 13 minutes.
Jonny Smith did pull a goal back on 25 minutes but it was a brief respite, Fleetwood 4-1 up at break before adding a fifth five minutes into the second half.
Substitute Desire Segbe Azankpo scored a second for Oldham on 77 minutes but it was little consolation for Dino Maamria’s men.
Azankpo had replaced Zac Emmerson with the 15-year-old being handed his first start for the club.
Latics are without a game this weekend after their game at Stevenage was postponed due to international call-ups.
