Former Oldham full-back Brian Curry, who scored 299 points for the club in two seasons in the mid-1960s, has died in a Huddersfield care home at the age of 84.

Oldham paid Huddersfield £5,000 for his services in 1966 – a big fee back then – after he had kicked 119 goals for the Fartown club in the previous season to finish second in the national charts behind Len Killeen of St Helens with 120.

Behind Killeen and Curry on the leader board that year were some of the sport's biggest names like Laurie Gilfedder of Wigan (107), Terry Clawson of Bradford Northern (100) and Neil Fox of Wakefield Trinity (98).

Oldham at the time were looking for a replacement for South African John Winton, who had returned home, and £5,000 for Curry was considered to be good business.

In 53 games for Oldham he scored 145 goals and three tries before moving on to Blackpool Borough and eventually returning to his roots at Huddersfield in June 1971.

There he would suffer a severely dislocated neck vertebrae that would bring his career to an end.

He would later spend two spells in charge of the Huddersfield club and two spells on the coaching staff.
