FORMER Oldham loan star Jonny Smith has joined League One Swindon on a season-long loan.

It will be the 23-year-old’s fifth loan spell away from Bristol City having played for Cheltenham, AFC Fylde and Tranmere before spending 2019/20 with Latics.

The winger, yet to make a senior appearance for the Robins, scored nine goals in 28 appearances at Boundary Park to become a real hit with supporters.

Now he is stepping up to the third tier with a side who were crowned League Two champions in a season curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Elsewhere, another former Latic is going to line up against Oldham next season after Dean Furman signed for Carlisle.

Returning to England following a spell in his homeland with SuperSport United, the 56-cap Bafana Bafana international spent time on trial with the Cumbrians before signing a one-year contract.

Furman made 131 Latics appearances before leaving for Doncaster in 2013.

“This one could work out to be an excellent signing for us, and I’m delighted we’ve managed to do it,” Carlisle manager Chris Beech said.

“He’s such an intelligent footballer, with the ability to dictate a game, and he adds leadership and maturity into that area of the pitch.

“Dean will one hundred per cent help to improve our other midfield players through the application of his work, and that’s a huge plus for me. We’ve got some real talent in the building and I’m excited to see that progress.

“Dean’s on the older side of players we’ve recruited this summer at 32, with it typically being the young energy we’ve gone for, but nevertheless he’s one that’s in fantastic shape, super fit. He’s a great pro with a great attitude and I’m looking forward to him making us even better.”
