OLDHAM have confirmed the signing of Australian forward George Blackwood.

The 23-year-old has signed a two-year deal at Boundary Park having left former club Adelaide United earlier in the year and becomes the club’s 12th summer signing.

Blackwood joins up with his fellow countryman Harry Kewell after spending all of his professional career in the Australian A-League, coming through the youth set-up at Sydney FC before a move to Adelaide in 2017.

Whilst with the Reds, the forward made 72 appearances across all competitions scoring 16 goals and featured six times for the Australian Under 23s side.

Playing mostly as a striker, he also has experience playing on both sides of midfield, as well as more centrally.

"It's a wonderful signing for us, it's a great opportunity and it's my first Australian that I've signed and I know what he's capable of,” said Kewell following the announcement.

"He's very creative, he can go down the line or inside, he's great in the air and his link-up play is very good.

“So he's going to add competition to the attacking ranks and raise the level even more.

"I'm excited to work with him and get the best out of him. I want to see that determination he has.

“He's a Sydney boy from my neck of the woods, so it's important we get this right as I want to see him achieve great things at this club."

Elsewhere, Latics found out they will head to Morecambe in the second round of the Carabao Cup after their 3-0 win over Carlisle.

The tie will be played in the week commencing September 14 with the winners facing Newcastle or Blackburn in round three, that stage of the competition taking place the following week.

Latics’ Carabao Cup involvement means the EFL Trophy clash with Wolves’ Under-21s has been postponed with a date to be confirmed.
