HARRY Kewell has been sacked as manager of Oldham Athletic.

The club’s hierarchy have decided to part company with the former Leeds and Liverpool ace with Latics 16th in League Two after the 0-0 draw with struggling Southend.

It is understood there have been growing concerns about the form at Boundary Park under Kewell and the number of goals conceded this season.

Owner Abdallah Lemsagam and his brother, sporting director Mohamed, have in the past made swift appointments when electing to change head coach.

Kewell's assistant Alan Maybury has also left the club.

A brief club statement read: “We would like to thank both for their efforts this season and wish them well in the future.”

Kewell took charge back in August and was the sixth permanent appointment since the Lemsagams took charge in January 2018.

No Latics boss has completed a full season at the helm since Lee Johnson in the 2013-14 campaign.

Kewell oversaw 32 league games, the same as predecessor Dino Maamria, the joint-longest of any appointment under the Lemsagams.

The Australian had called for patience in his bid to turn Latics’ fortunes around and as recently as Friday told The Oldham Times that he felt the club hierarchy understood his need for time.

“I’m sure they’re understanding but they’re winners. I’m a winner too,” Kewell said

“We want the best but we’ve got to be realistic as well. They understand.

“I think this is a huge club, I think it needs to get back to where it has been but it’s going to take a lot of work.

“We’re working, we’re trying to put things together but we need to be able to put results on the board first and foremost and then like I said, it’s down to them.

“I’ve loved every minute here. Do I want it to continue? Of course I do because I think this club could actually go somewhere.

“My staff are enjoying it, my medical staff are pulling together, we’re working with everyone to get this club back to where it should be.”
