EARLY days yet and with only one point from the first four on offer, Oldham haven’t made the start they had hoped for in Betfred League One.

Nevertheless, Roughyeds can climb into the division’s play-off zone if they beat bottom club West Wales Raiders at the Vestacare Stadium on Sunday (3pm) and other results go their way.

First and foremost, of course, Roughyeds need to smash the Raiders, but given that the Welshmen have conceded 134 points in their two league defeats so far by Swinton Lions at Sale and by Rochdale Hornets down in Llanelli, Stu Littler’s men will be fancied to pick up their first league win.

They then need title favourites Swinton Lions to make it three wins from three games at Doncaster OR Hunslet to win at Rochdale and Oldham will find themselves in the top six.

The team finishing top goes up automatically and the next five take part in a complicated play-off system to determine one more team to win promotion.

On the evidence of what we’ve seen so far, Roughyeds have a lot of work to do before they can seriously start talking about promotion, but there was a vast improvement from game one at home to Keighley and their 22-22 draw at Hunslet last week.

Furthermore, star forward Jordan Andrade didn’t play at Hunslet because he got married the day before and he is expected to be back in the 17 this week.

He trained on Tuesday when Littler confirmed that he would be available for selection against the Raiders.

There are doubts about scrum-half Dave Hewitt (hip) and centre Calvin Wellington (unwell), but the good news is that Andrade will be back and another forward, Jack Arnold, has recovered from the leg injury that caused him to leave the action and be substituted at Hunslet.
