FRANK Rothwell has circumnavigated the world in a yacht, rowed solo across the Atlantic and appeared on Bear Grylls' The Island, enduring torrential storms, gruelling conditions and the scrutiny of reality TV.

But after being unveiled as Oldham Athletic's new chairman after completing a takeover of his hometown club, Latics' new chief executive Darren Royle quipped: “I’d just like to say to Frank, if you thought the Atlantic was tough and a white knuckle ride, you ain’t seen nothing yet.”

Fortunately, as his CV and personal achievements would suggest, Rothwell likes a challenge.

And Royle is grateful that he has taken this one on at Boundary Park, describing the Rothwell family's takeover as "a dream ticket for the town".

In an emotive speech introducing the club's benefactor, Royle added: "It’s a very important day in the 127-year history of the club and for the town and the fans.

"We need to draw a line and look up with excitement and opportunity.

"It’s a new start and opportunity for the club. Some of us will remember the glory years and some of the more barren times. Today’s an opportunity to look forward.

"I’m honoured and delighted after a thorough four weeks of due diligence the Rothwell family have completed the purchase of OAFC, and are very close to completing the purchase of Boundary Park in the coming days.

"It’s a dream ticket for the town, local people with the best interests of the club and community at heart.

"We're excited about the future."

Royle added his thanks to Oldham Council and the club staff who he credited for "keeping things going" amid tough times.

In addition, he confirmed that the North Stand, incorporating the OEC, and gym would be consolidated in the club structure.

Royle also revealed that, before the official press conference, the Rothwell family and other directors had met with the club's various supporter groups - Push The Boundary, Oldham Athletic Supporters' Foundation, The Athleticos, Stadium Park 32 and OASIS - to inform them.

Fans had gathered outside the ground and began to cheer, once Rothwell began to speak.

He interrupted his press conference to go to the window to wave at the crowd outside.

He later made his way outside to greet them and was met by chants of "There's only one Frank Rothwell" and "We've got our club back!"
