NORTH Wales Crusaders dominated the second half against Roughyeds to win their fifth game in a row, by 29-16, to cement second place in BetFred League One.

There’s nothing flashy or awesome about North Wales, but they are certainly on a crusade, as their name suggests, and they must be the biggest side in the division.

They play to their strengths and in a tough, contact sport like rugby league size does matter.

Roughyeds, conceding weight, bulk and experience, coped with the Crusaders’ greater physicality for 40 minutes but the second half was all about the visitors as the hosts started to make unforced errors.

With the wind behind them, Stu Littler’s men did well to lead 10-8 at half time, but it was a different story afterwards as Crusaders scored four unanswered tries, took total control of the rucks and got a grip of the game based on their powerful pack and their ability to complete their sets.

Roughyeds were knocked about physically, started to make mistakes and were heavily punished on the scoreboard.

Littler’s lads started the game well and went in front with a great try by Owen Restall after excellent work by centre Kian Morgan.

On the back of three penalties and a six-again, Crusaders then had a long period in the ascendancy, which produced tries for Alex Eckley and Pat Ah Van, but two wind-assisted, long-range penalties by Hewitt kept Roughyeds in the game and gave them a 10-8 interval lead.

Crusaders regained the lead three minutes into the second-half. however, and they never looked back.

Oldham tried hard but they trailed 28-10 before young half-back Logan Astley, on loan from Wigan Warriors, scored the best try of the game near the end.

He spotted a gap, turned on the afterburners, sped past a posse of defenders and swerved around Cru’s full-back Tommy Johnson with ease to score a gem of a try which Hewitt converted.

There was still time for Crusaders half-back Reece Briers to land a drop goal.
