Latics have completed the signing of versatile defender Oscar Threlkeld on loan from League Two side Bradford City until January 2.

Threlkeld can play at right-back and as a holding midfielder but is also comfortable playing at the heart of defence.

The 27-year-old made 27 appearances for the Yorkshire club last season in all competitions.

“I’m pleased to have completed the addition of a good player in an important position,” said manager John Sheridan.

“I probably see Oscar as more of a defensive midfielder but he can play across the back-line and in a back three, so he offers good versatility.

“Oscar brings with him a great deal of experience, he is a smart operator and will add a lot of strength and steel to the side.”

Threlkeld began his career at Bolton Wanderers and made a handful of appearances in the Championship prior to a loan spell at Plymouth Argyle.

He joined the Pilgrims on a permanent deal in the summer of 2016 and was part of the squad that won promotion to League One the following season.

The defender also had a spell at Belgian side Waasland-Beveren before returning to Plymouth on loan.

Threlkeld then spent a couple of seasons at Salford City, making over 50 appearances for the Ammies, before heading to Bradford.

He added: "I’m really happy to get the deal through, this is a massive club and I see it as a big opportunity for me to get game-time in a good team,” said Threlkeld.

“I know a lot about the manager, he has made it clear that the aim is to get back into the EFL and I’m looking forward to starting playing.”

The deal is subject to EFL and FA approval.
