John Sheridan admits he is disappointed after his side failed to hold onto their lead in the 1-1 draw against York City.

Latics went in front through Hallam Hope’s goal early in the second half but were pegged back by Olly Dyson’s effort 17 minutes from time.

Sheridan felt his side were “lethargic” during the opening 45 minutes but was pleased with their response after the break.

He said: “[It is] obviously disappointing because we want to win every game, but I am pleased we have ended up getting something from it.

“The first half was lethargic. I told the lads at half time we have got to start games better and get involved in the game a lot quicker than we do. I thought we were very flat for some reason, why I don’t know.

“I just said to them, ‘When you go out, I’d like you to think you are going to be the best player on the pitch’.

“I thought we were excellent when we came out after half time. We just made a chance and I thought for 20, 25 minutes, we scored a goal and were totally in control of the game.

“Then we’ve had one or two half chances again and once the goal goes in, for some reason we start doing the basics poorly again.

“We have got plenty of bodies around where the goal has come from. People think they are doing something but they should be doing a lot better because the goal has come out of the blue.”

Hope’s strike rounded off a well-worked move, and the Latics chief is keen to see more of the same from his side.

He added: “Just play on the front foot. Get it up the pitch, pass it quicker. Our goalie is the prime example of how I want us to play.

“When we delay things and allow people to recover and get behind the ball, it doesn’t matter who you are playing – it is very difficult. The goal is a prime example of just doing things simple and quickly.

“It looks an excellent goal – probably two or three passes and it is in the back of the net. It is because we are trying to hurt people early, people are on the move.

“We need to do a lot better, I think we are slowly getting better. I am pleased to get something but I am disappointed because of the way the game was going second half.

“Once we scored, I thought we were controlling the game and we have allowed them in. Then, the chance at the end has cost us.”

The result leaves Sheridan’s men 15th in the National League table, having taken eight points from their opening six matches.
