Latics defender Nathan Sheron is relishing Saturday’s clash with Chesterfield at Boundary Park.

Paul Cook’s side have made a strong start to the new campaign, winning four of their opening six league matches without tasting defeat.

The Derbyshire club are currently top of the National League table – a point above second-placed Wrexham.

But Sheron is looking forward to the challenge and hopes Latics can rise to the occasion at the weekend.

“Those are the games you want to be playing in. They are the ones you look for,” said the defender.

“Hopefully, we can go on to do ourselves justice and get three points and have a good go.

“The supporters, they have been magnificent with us. Obviously, they have done a lot of travelling and to see them in their numbers [against York], it is just a shame we didn’t send them home with three points.”

Latics were held to a 1-1 draw against York City in their last outing, with Olly Dyson cancelling out Hallah Hope’s opener.

Sheron admits there was “a bit of frustration” in the dressing room after failing to hold on to the lead.

He added: “First half, we weren’t at the races but second half, we had some words in the changing room and came out of the blocks flying.

“We should really have been more than 1-0 up. I feel like if we got another goal it could have been game over really. We have just got to manage the game and see games out.”

“It was physical. Obviously, they have got a big fella up front and he is a handful.

“Both teams want to compete and that is the nature of the division now. Everyone wants to compete and you have got to earn the right to play.”

The 24-year-old was one of many additions to Josh Sheridan’s squad over the summer, joining on a free transfer from Harrogate Town.

Oscar Threlkeld and Mitchell Roberts have also joined Latics’ defensive ranks more recently, both featuring against York.

Sheron is pleased with how the new additions have settled in and hopes the backline can tighten up over the coming weeks and months.

“We work on it in training. We know what we are doing in a four or in a three,” he explained. “It is drilled into us where to be and what position to be in.

“It is good, the new lads have come in and taken to it. It is what you want, we are ready for Chesterfield on Saturday.

“Obviously, we have conceded more goals than we wanted to so to be more solid, that is the aim really and to get back to the clean sheets.”

Latics are currently 15th in the National League table, having taken eight points from their opening six matches.
