DAVID Unsworth has promised hard work on the training ground to ensure Oldham Athletic are no longer a soft touch, after his first game in charge ended in a 3-0 defeat at Bromley.

Latics trailed 2-0 at the break after conceding twice in the space of six minutes.

In a bright start to the game, there had been chances to trouble a Bromley side that boasted the best home record in the National League.

But Oldham were their own worst enemy as, having failed to pose too stern a test at one end, they showed their vulnerability at the other, and when they did not clear their lines Omar Sowunmi swooped to score from close range.

Reece Hannam then doubled Bromley's lead as he got on the end of Jude Arthur's cross and finished from a tight angle.

Bromley completed back-to-back 3-0 home wins when Mike Fondop turned a 59th minute corner into his own net.

"It was a disappointing result. They've not really had to work hard for the goals and that, just speaking to the players, has been the problem away from home this season," said Unsworth.

"It's something that we need to address.

"In fairness they had a go and kept going in the second half but we must rectify, not the mistakes for the goals but just team shape for the goals. It was too easy. We don't want to be a soft touch conceding from set pieces.

"There's lots to address and you probably learn more about the players in defeat rather than you do in a win, which is obviously not what we want, but there's no doubting it's a big job and that's why I'm standing here, I wouldn't have been brought in if it wasn't.

"There's lots to do and it's all work on the training ground that we need to instil in the players and it takes a little bit of time.

"I'm not having one of my teams being a soft touch, but in fairness to the players they kept going."

Unsworth, who made a double substitution at half-time, added: "You've got to do something when you're 2-0 down at half-time, you can't be seen to just go with it. You've got to look to be positive and instil belief in the team and the players.

"We threw two strikers on and went to a system that we felt might be better than the system we'd started with. We'd worked all week on trying to play, it didn't work because we didn't get on the ball enough. The first 15 minutes we did and it was fine and we got into some good areas, but this is the issue and I'm sure this is the key point that people before me have found, the inconsistency side of things.

"But when you lose 3-0 and your two best players are your centre backs, who played really well, it shows you just how big a job it is.

"The first goal is followed by the second and the boys tell me that's how they feel in games.

"We need to change that and we need to change that quickly.

"The work will be done, I can guarantee the fans that these boys will work and work and work.

"I don't want us to be a soft touch."
