Oldham Athletic have appointed John Ebbrell as the club’s new assistant manager.

The 52-year-old, who was assistant to David Unsworth in the U23 set-up at Everton, has been reunited with the new Latics boss at Boundary Park, bringing with him a vast amount of playing and coaching experience.

Ebbrell’s arrival follows the appointment of Francis Jeffers as first team coach and B-team manager, completing Unsworth’s backroom staff.

“John is an outstanding coach, a real student of the game and we’ve worked together closely for a number of years with a lot of success,” said Unsworth, ahead of his first home game in charge this afternoon, against Wrexham.

“At both first-team and academy level, we have got to know each other inside out and myself, John and Francis work really well together as a team.

“John is a very different type of coach to me, which I like, and there’s a real opportunity to hit different areas of coaching.

“He has a vast amount of expertise, which I’m sure he’ll bring to the fold from day one and now my team is in place, I’m really looking forward to getting to work as a coaching staff.”

Ebbrell began his playing career at Everton in the 1986, and was a regular at Goodison Park during the first half of the 1990s, being part of the side that won the FA Cup in 1995 alongside Unsworth.

Howard Kendall took the midfielder to Sheffield United in 1997, but injury forced him to retire at the age of just 29.

Ebbrell became chief scout at Everton and later oversaw Tranmere Rovers’ Centre of Excellence, before returning to Everton in 2015.

After holding a number of roles in the academy, he was promoted to assistant manager of Everton U23s, under David Unsworth, working with him in that capacity for six years.
