OLDHAM Athletic have signed exciting young Sheffield United midfielder Sydie Peck on a youth loan, and turned down an offer from Dorking Wanderers for goalkeeper Magnus Norman.

Tipped by Latics boss David Unsworth as a future Premier League player, 18-year-old Peck is a box-to-box central midfielder who has already trained with the Blades' first team.

The teenager is set to go straight into the squad to face Barnet at Boundary Park on Saturday, while there is a chance captain Liam Hogan could make a comeback after playing over an hour for the B-team in midweek.

Unsworth admitted it would be a late decision on whether Hogan would be included or not, but said that he is closer to playing his preferred formation of 4-3-3 with the players he has recruited allied to those coming back from injury.

It is expected that Norman will return to the line-up in goal, despite interest from a rival club.

Of his latest addition, Unsworth said: "Peck is a top talent and I think he'll be a Premier League footballer at some point in his career.

"He's a central midfielder, all-action, gets forward, scores goals, loves a tackle. He's box to box, a top top talent and we're really fortunate to get him."

And there is scope to forge a link with Unsworth's former club.

"It's John Ebbrell's link with the manager (Paul Heckingbottom) and obviously my links with the club as well," added the former Blades defender of how the move had come about.

"They're really happy for the young players to come here, which we're delighted with.

"It's a youth loan so they can call him back whenever, which suits them, but we'll just keep extending it month to month."
