Oldham boxer Jack Kilgannon bounced back from defeat last time out with a points victory over Tanzanian Meshack Mwankemwa on Saturday.

The 27-year-old super middleweight lost his first fight as a professional in April when he was stopped by Zak Chelli in Newcastle.

But he put that behind him closer to home at Manchester’s AO Arena at the weekend on the undercard of Natasha Jonas’ big win against Marie-Eve Dicaire.

Fighting over six rounds, Kilgannon earned a 58-56 points verdict from referee Steve Gray.

From the start it was clear it would be a tricky bout for ‘Jacky Boy’ Kilgannon against a 26-year-old opponent who looked to get on the front foot.

Kilgannon had early joy with his jab and landed some powerful uppercuts in the early rounds as well.

But Mwankemwa retained his belief and kept coming forward with some good body shots and right hooks.

And in the fourth round a sustained spell of good blows saw him hurt Kilgannon, who was clearly rocked at one point.

But he stood strong and switched his approach to longer range and his jab and right-hand shots saw him win the last two rounds to secure a 12th win of his professional career.
