DAVID Unsworth felt Oldham Athletic delivered an almost complete performance in this afternoon's draw at Maidstone.

Latics were just missing a goal to show for a much improved display, in which Timmy Abraham had a number of chances and newest signings Sydie Peck and Ellis Chapman impressed.

But, while they remain in the bottom four going into a free fortnight, overall Unsworth sees their clean sheet and stalemate as something to build on.

"It was a game we should have won," said the Latics boss.

"We played really well and created numerous opportunities, but we just didn't have that killer instinct, that killer touch be it either a finish or a pass.

"But there were so many encouraging signs and so much to be positive about and work with, probably since the Wrexham game and Yeovil game.

"We looked like a proper team. We created numerous chances away from home on a really difficult surface, let's be honest, and we should have won the game.

"The lads are not devastated but the lads are down and they're so disappointed that they haven't won the game. I like that in the team, I like that in the players, but there were so many good things today.

"We played some really good stuff today and I thought we were very good.

"I'm as disappointed as I may sound with the result, but the performance was very good.

"I'm really happy with the performance other than the final finish, and that's the hardest thing to do in the game. That's why strikers cost a lot of money, that's why everybody's after a striker and strikers who score goals."

Although Latics' wait for a first league away win continues. Unsworth noted some key attacking and defensive performances within a game in which they looked to get on the front foot from the outset.

"We played Sydie a little bit further forward, he showed his quality today, he will just get better and better and better," Unsworth continued.

"He's going to be a top class footballer.

"Ellis came into the team and got 90 minutes under his belt, Timmy does some unbelievable things in terms of pressing and creating opportunities from nothing, the keeper's made a great save from him in the first half and a couple of saves from him in the second as well. In another game he could have had a hat-trick, and that's the life of a striker.

He added: "(Liam) Hogan is back and I thought Hogan and Clarke were outstanding today, and the goalkeeper (Magnus Norman). That three at the back were outstanding and will only get better and help us.

"The positives in terms of performance, clean sheet, looking like a team, our build-up play, some decent football, it was there today, creating chances as well."
