Oldham Athletic have signed goalkeeper Mathew Hudson on a deal until the end of the season.

Hudson, who has impressed with National League North side Buxton this season, teams up with the Latics squad ahead of this weekend’s match at Solihull, with goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler ruled out with Covid.

Hudson trained with goalkeeper Magnus Norman today, and travelled with the squad ahead of tomorrow’s lunchtime kick-off

Latics boss David Unsworth said: “Magnus is our number one and has done very well this season, but this is an opportunity to freshen things up and bring in some competition to push him on.

"Jayson Leutwiler has currently got Covid so we've needed to act quickly and I'm very pleased to have Matt on board.

"He made his debut for Preston when he was 17, has played in the Championship and Steve Thompson, our head of recruitment, rates him very highly.

"Sometimes players can drop down the leagues due to various circumstances but I believe we’ve got a goalkeeper who can be with us for a good period of time.

"I'd like to thank Jamie Vermiglio and Buxton for their help in allowing the deal to be completed so quickly."

Hudson is a product of the Preston North End Academy. He made his first-team debut as a teenager, coming on in place of Jordan Pickford in a game againt Leeds in 2015.

The 24-year-old also spent time out on loan with Bury and Bamber Bridge, making four appearances for both sides.

He was released by Preston in the summer, and spent the first few months of the season with Buxton.
