“They are all big games now for us, there is no getting away from it. The table is the table.”

That was what Latics’ assistant manager John Ebbrell had to say when asked about the importance of Sunday afternoon’s clash with Torquay United at Boundary Park.

David Unsworth’s men are currently 23rd in the National League table following the late 2-1 defeat at Boreham Wood in midweek. Lee Ndlovu scored the winner deep into stoppage time after Ben Tollitt thought he had rescued a point.

Ebbrell knows results need to improve but felt there were plenty of positives to take from their display against a side just outside the play-off places.

The former Everton man reckons the results will start to come if Latics can match the level of performance they showed on Tuesday night.

Ebbrell said: “We are in a rebuild, that is the way we feel. We are trying to rebuild the squad, but at the same time we have got to pick results up on the way.

“Each game becomes more pressurised but we are up for it, we will be fine. We have just got to be ready for every game and put in that level of performance (against Boreham Wood). I believe that level of performance gets us wins.”

He added: “We are in the results business, there is no getting away from that. But as a coach I see us passing the ball better, I see us creating good chances.

“At both ends of the pitch, that is where we have lost. We need to put those chances away and we need to defend better in the key moments.”

There have been a number of new arrivals since Ebbrell arrived at Boundary Park as part of Unsworth’s backroom staff.

The 53-year-old believes they are heading in the right direction and is hopeful that they can reward the fans with some victories soon.

“Across the board I think we look like a team that is coming together, passes the ball well, looks to get in behind teams with quality, get crosses in the box and play with intensity,” he explained.

“I feel like someone is going to get it from us soon, and they have got to.

“We understand the importance of every game. We have no alternative but to move onto Sunday and be ready.”

Torquay have also had a tough first half of the season and are currently just a single point above Latics in the table.

However, they enter the game on the back of a 1-0 win against Dagenham and Redbridge, with Will Goodwin getting the decisive goal on the stroke of half time.

The points were shared when the sides met earlier in the season following a goalless draw at Plainmoor. Latics finished the game with 10 men after Dan Gardner was given his marching orders.
