David Unsworth praised Jayson Leutwiler for his penalty shoot-out prowess as Latics progressed to the FA Trophy fourth round.

Oldham were held to a goalless draw by National League North side Peterborough Sports, having ended the game with 10 men following injury to Hallam Hope after they had used all three substitutes.

For the second time this season a cup tie had to be settled on penalties.

And after Magnus Norman was the hero against Chester in the FA Cup, Leutwiler took his moment in the FA Trophy.

"I'm delighted for him, he's not had a lot of football this year, big Norm's been in great form so he's had to be very patient," said Unsworth.

"Norm's had a little baby in the last couple of days so he got his opportunity and it's funny how fate plays out.

"I'm delighted for him. He's a great lad, he's great in the dressing room, he's been ultra professional, supported Norm all season and I'm delighted for him. He deserved that moment tonight."

But Leutwiler's performance was a positive on a frustrating night for the Boundary Park chief, as Latics struggled to penetrate a resolute Sports side.

"We didn't play well at all, we couldn't break them down, but we showed great character to win on penalties. It was pretty similar to the Chester game really. We didn't make anywhere near the amount of chances that we usually do and we were off it, but we've played a lot better and lost," said Unsworth.

"I always say you look at the performance first and we didn't have enough quality to break them down and they defended really well and sat deep and we didn't have the quality to create the opportunities and put the ball in the net, but we're in the hat and I suppose that's the main thing.

"I said to the players in the dressing room at the end they showed character. We haven't played well at all tonight, we quite easily could have felt sorry for ourselves but we stood up and we came back and we won on penalties. I'm delighted with their attitude, I always have been really. The character's always been there, we're just lacking a little bit of quality. But we're slowly getting there."
