Oldham Athletic were booed off after exiting the FA Trophy with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of National League rivals Gateshead.

Latics finished the game with 10 men after Peter Clarke was sent off for two bookable offences for what appeared to be dissent.

At that stage Latics had fallen behind to an 86th minute goal for Robbie Tinkler, who had made it 2-1 - a goal that Clarke had seemingly disputed due to a suspicion of offside.

And Gateshead utilised the extra man to secure the win, and their place in the fifth round, with Greg Olley scoring a third in the last minute.

In what was technically a home game for Gateshead, with the game switching venues because of a floodlight problem at the Gateshead International Stadium, Mike Williamson's side took the lead in the 15th minute through Kamil Conteh firing across Magnus Norman and into the bottom left corner.

It was a goal out of nothing and it took Latics a little while to adjust.

But with the confidence of overcoming a 1-0 deficit to win 5-1 at Dorking Wanderers a week earlier David Unsworth's side plugged away in difficult conditions and eventually got back on level terms when Clarke was on hand to guide in Benny Couto's corner from close range for his second in as many games.

The momentum stayed with Latics until the break, when they introduced Timmy Abraham for Sydie Peck, who had taken a knock towards the end of the first half.

But the attacking impetus they had enjoyed at Dorking deserted them, despite the introduction of Alex Reid and Ben Tollitt as well in the second half/.

Settling another FA Trophy tie on penalties again seemed likely, as they had against Peterborough Sports. But in the last five minutes Tinkler and Olley capitalised on some woeful defending to seal it for Gateshead.
