Ellis Chapman will stay at Oldham Athletic until the end of the season, at least.

The on-loan midfielder has had his deal from League One Cheltenham extended, after settling in well to Boundary Park life.

And Latics boss David Unsworth says he is a player who he feels can have a future at the club.

"Ellis has done smashing, he's a really good footballer. He was on the radar for a long time, he's a great lad and I'm hoping we can potentially sit down with him in the summer and discuss my plans for him moving forward next year and beyond," he said.

"I think he's a player that can come on the full journey with us.

"He can play anywhere across the midfield, at a push he can play at the back, he has that versatility which I really like. He's a smashing boy and I love coaching him and working with him.

"He wants to be with us and I'd like to sit down with him in the summer and show him my plans for him moving forward."

Chapman, who recently turned 22, marked the occasion with his first goal for Latics, rounding off a 5-1 win at Dorking Wanderers less than a fortnight ago.

Unsworth added: "He wants to play central midfielder but I think where we are at at the precise moment I think we need his versatility. He can play off the left and in the middle so we'll certainly be using him.

"He's the right age, right type, coachable and someone to come on the journey with us."
