Magnus Norman made some magnificent saves to ensure three points for Latics at Chesterfield, but the modest goalkeeper cited a team effort in a second clean sheet in three games.

Norman's stop from a deflected Liam Mandeville shot in the final 10 minutes was arguably the pick of a superb bunch as Latics endured some backs-to-the-wall moments after taking a sixth minute lead through Devarn Green on his full debut.

But Norman said it was down to the all-round defensive efforts of the team that they were able to hold out for the win.

"It was a team effort, even from the front with Joe (Nuttall) and when Mikey (Fondop) came on. Everyone needed to because Chesterfield are a very good team. Everyone played their part and it's really good to get the three points," said Norman after the win.

"It was important that we kept our discipline, concentration and our shape.

"I think some of the lads, myself included, thrive on games like that because you want to keep the ball out of the net and you want to defend and I think we did that really well.

"The win was the main thing for me but I'm happy to make saves.

"You have days when you make a couple of saves and you start getting confident and you feel like anything that comes at you you've got a chance of saving it.

"Luckily it went our way."

And Norman said it felt good to make amends after the disappointment of a midweek defeat at Gateshead.

"After Tuesday it was a big game for us to make a statement and turn it around. The boys are buzzing, we did really well," said the stopper.

"We needed a response at half-time on Tuesday and we came out and the second half was better but we didn't get a positive result.

"So we needed to get a point or get three points (against Chesterfield) and we're just pleased to get the win."

And Norman thanked a near sell-out away end for their unwavering support throughout the game.

"They started singing from minute one all the way to the end, and then after the game they were brilliant. It's just good to see it packed out," said Norman of the 1,306-strong following.

"That's what you play football for really, for the recognition of the supporters and to make them happy, especially when they have to travel away. It was brilliant."
