A superb first-half strike by Louis Potts, his seventh goal in nine games since rejoining the club from Wythenshawe Town, was enough to secure all three points for hosts Avro against Northwich Victoria in the NWCFL Premier Division last Saturday.

The win leaves Avro six points clear at the top of the table.

However, manager Alex Frost is only too aware of the dangers of getting carried away with the situation in which his team find themselves.

He said: “We have had a brilliant couple of months and an amazing season overall - in fact, we now have as many points as the team who finished second last year, and we still have five games left to play.

“However, I think this division is tougher than ever this time around.

“There are four sides in contention for those top two places, and by the time we play again a week on Saturday, the other three will all have played at least two more games.

“Vauxhall Motors could have overtaken us by then, and Wythenshawe could have moved to within a point of us.

“Bury will still have three games in hand on us and they might be only two points behind.

“There really is no point in getting over-excited; we are in with a shout of what would be a magnificent achievement for this club, but it really is no more than that right now.

“We just need to keep our heads and take each game as it comes, treat each one as a cup final and look to win all five.

“We know that if we can do that, we are guaranteed at least a shot at promotion.

“But it is a massive ask to win two games in a row in this league, let alone five, so we are all determined to keep our feet firmly on the ground.”

After a two-week break from league action, Avro will face a run of three games in a week, with Winsford United the visitors on April 1 before away trips to West Didsbury and Chorlton and the Isle of Man.

They finish their season with successive home games - the first a potentially mouth-watering clash with Vauxhall Motors, before Barnoldswick Town provide the opposition on April 22.

A second-place finish in the league would trigger a one-off promotion play off tie away from home against one of the Step Four sides with the worst points-per-game ratio outside the relegation zone.

However, the omens for such an outcome are good, with Skelmersdale United being promoted at the end of last season after a thumping 5-1 victory at Gloucestershire based side Cinderford Town.
