David Unsworth praised a professional performance as Latics’ 2-0 win at Scunthorpe United condemned their opponents to relegation to National League North.

Oldham led 1-0 at the break after former Scunthorpe man Devarn Green capitalised on Alex Reid’s flick-on from Magnus Norman’s long kick.

Then in the second half substitute Bassala Sambou converted the penalty he had earned to double Latics’ tally and secure their first win in seven games, against a side who had suffered relegation from the Football League with them last season.

"It was a very professional job. It was all about winning, it was all about getting the job done," said Latics boss Unsworth, who named an unchanged line-up from the team that had squandered a 2-0 lead at home to Altrincham to draw 2-2 on Good Friday, but was forced into two changes with what appeared to be groin injuries for both Joe Nuttall early in the first half and captain Liam Hogan midway through the second.

"I thought we were solid. We changed the shape when Joe Nuttall went off, got some control in the game and I was pleased with how they adapted to it.

"We spoke before the game about getting the job done, whatever that looked like.

“We played better last week and drew and we've played better and lost. It was all about getting the win today.

“We had a game plan and that went out of the window when Joe has to come off after 10 minutes. We switch, and after the three points that's the thing I'm most pleased with.

"I know the Oldham fans like to see two strikers but we felt it was best to go 4-3-3 especially when Joe came off and we got an element of control in the game. It was a very professional performance."

Unsworth also paid tribute to an army of almost 1,000 travelling fans for their part in the win.

"I'm delighted for the fans, 1,000 of them turned up, fantastic support. They back the players all the way through and we thank them for that," he said.

"It was a great following again today."

Of the injuries Unsworth added: "They look like a couple of groins. First impressions are not too bad, probably just a little bit of fatigue with two games in a close space of time. We'll see how they are.

"I thought Peter Clarke did really well when he came on and Bass was terrific when he came on and got his goal. It was a good opportunity for the other boys who haven't been playing."
