Latics have announced the launch of a new youth development squad aimed at young people in the local community.

The new programme is based at Boundary Park and will offer the chance to receive “professional football training alongside studying for an academic qualification”.

The squad will compete in the National League Youth Alliance and those who impress will also get the chance to play and train with the main youth team.

The club is holding a trial day at Chapel Road on Sunday, July 9. The trials will begin at 10.30am and there will be several sessions depending on the number of applicants.

Anyone interested can apply HERE as long as they are finishing school this summer and live within suitable travelling distance of Boundary Park. All applications must be submitted by June 18.

Latics’ new Academy manager said: “The opportunity to introduce a youth team development squad is a hugely exciting move for the club and provides a massive opportunity to youngsters within the area.

“As a club, we have a proud track record for developing our own talent and we want to give young people every chance to harness their talents.

“The programme is something different than any other as our U17s will be on-site every day at Boundary Park, so they'll actually be able to see them and be dipping into our training sessions sometimes.

"I have always been of the belief that there are people out there who miss the first cut in their career but still have the ability to make it as a professional.

“Not only is it an excellent education in terms of a qualification - with the chance to obtain an NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity - but with our fully qualified UEFA coaches, there will be a platform to fulfil your potential at both football and education.”

Successful applicants will be contacted to receive and invitation to the trial day.
