John Rooney is among the players that have been advised by Oldham Athletic to find a new club.

The Oldham Times understands that the midfielder - who is the brother of former Everton, Manchester United and England striker Wayne - has been told, along with Jordan Windass and Luke Burgess, that they are not part of manager David Unsworth’s first team plans for the forthcoming season.

Jayson Leutwiler is understood to have had a similar conversation after falling down the goalkeeping pecking order since the arrival of Mat Hudson from Buxton, and is expected to complete a move to Port Vale this week.

The other three could also have moved on by the end of the week, with Rooney likely to join Macclesfield on a season-long loan.

The 31-year-old, who won promotion to the Football League with Barrow in 2019/20, joined Latics last September on a two-year deal with an option of a third.

Burgess and Windass were both signed by former manager John Sheridan during an uncertain time for the club ahead of the 2022/23 season, before the takeover was finalised.

Junior Luamba, meanwhile, has joined Barnsley on trial. The striker, who came through the club’s youth ranks, was offered a new contract but has decided to explore other options. Latics would be entitled to compensation if he moved on.
