Avro manager Alex Frost was ‘delighted’ with another resilient display by his side as they came within seconds of securing a third league win in four on the road, before ultimately having to settle for a 2-2 draw against Clitheroe at the Eco Giant Stadium last weekend, writes Liam Bambridge.

The first half looked destined to end goalless, until home defender Billy Priestley rose highest to head home in stoppage time. However, the Ro roared back after the break, with two goals in five minutes turning the game on its head.

First Kyle Hawley held off the challenge of Priestley to slip the ball past Clitheroe keeper Danny Taberner and bring his side level. And then just five minutes later came a goal which went viral on social media almost as soon as it was posted.

Avro thought that they had scored when Jake Cottrell’s corner from the right appeared to have hit the stanchion inside the goal, before bouncing back into play and being hooked clear. The officials remained unconvinced, but within seconds Kane Wallwork had rendered the protests immaterial with a stunning 40 yard strike into the top corner.

Even Jacob Hanson’s equaliser in the ninth minute of injury time was not enough to dampen Frost’s spirits. “Of course we are gutted, I thought we were superb again out there again today,” he said.

“But we need to realise that it is a measure of how far we have come that we are really disappointed not to have come away with a win from one of the strongest sides in the division.”

On Saturday, Avro host Stalybridge Celtic in the FA Trophy - a second meeting between the sides in less than a month after Frost’s side won 3-2 in a league clash over the Bank Holiday weekend.
