"A game of two halves" was how Steve Thompson summed up Latics' 1-1 draw at home to Maidenhead United.

Alex Reid put Oldham in front just before the half-hour with his fourth goal in five games.

But a slender lead looked increasingly precarious as the visitors raised their game and their tempo, and had their efforts rewarded with an 88th minute equaliser from substitute Brad Keetch.

"We went in full of praise in the first half because I think that's the best we've played at home. We just needed that second goal, that killer instinct in the final third.

"But in the second half we sat back, we didn't get into the pockets, we never drove upfield.

"It literally was a game of two halves, and that was a big disappointment for us," said Thompson.

"As good as we were in the first half, I thought we had an identity about us, we were getting in pockets, we looked like we had energy, we needed that second goal I'll be honest with you.

"Second half they matched us up and they won the battles, we never got up the pitch, it never stuck up top and we just didn't look at the races.

"They play to a system that suits them, they get the ball forward, they've got big lads up front. We weren't brave enough on the ball, the ball was coming back too much, we never got the wide players in.

"In the first half we said 'the less touches the better to get it out wide' and the full backs doubled up there and we got into pockets, but in the second half we never did that.

"We needed that second goal, but I don't know where that second half performance came from, and it's something we need to look at."

Despite the frustration, Thompson was determined to look at the positives.

"We didn't get carried away when we went on a winning run, but we're disappointing with the second half, especially considering how good we were in the first half, but we're still unbeaten," he continued.

"There are no easy games in this league and they had a good result against Chesterfield at the weekend.

"It was a great strike, although disappointing in the 88th minute.

"Looking at it now the games are catching up with some of them.

"We'll have a look at the second half just to see what we can do differently, talk them through things, and we'll be ready for Saturday."
