Shaun Hobson believes Oldham Athletic have a squad good enough for League Two, and wants to use the FA Cup as their chance to prove it.

Latics were handed a trip to League Two Newport County as reward for last month's fourth qualifying round win at Altrincham.

And defender Hobson is seeing it as the ideal opportunity to show they are worthy of a return to the Football League.

"I think we've got it in our squad in the sense of our squad is good enough to be in the league as it is, we just need to prove it," said Hobson, ahead of tomorrow's first round tie at Rodney Parade (kick-off 3pm).

"It's not even about talking about it, we just need to prove it and we can do that on Saturday."

And, for Hobson, it's not just about the opportunities that the first round has to offer.

"Any team in or around this league you could go into round two then round three, get a Premier League team, that's massive for the club," said the 25-year-old former Southend defender, who has never gone beyond round one.

"It's massive for the players - once in a lifetime experiences can come from a good cup run, so that would be good."
