Oldham Athletic have further boosted their firepower by signing Joe Garner on a free transfer from Carlisle United.

The experienced striker is Latics' latest recruit, adding to a front line that includes fellow newcomer Andrew Dallas, as well as 17-goal top scorer James Norwood.

The former Nottingham Forest, Preston North End and Wigan Athletic striker has agreed an 18-month deal.

“We’re delighted to have Joe on board," said Oldham boss Micky Mellon. "He had other offers but he was very keen to be a part of what we’re doing here.

“He has fantastic leadership qualities and experience at winning things, he knows the qualities that are needed in the dressing room.”

Garner, who has won promotion via the play-offs with both Preston and Carlisle, said: “The way the manager spoke about the team and club, how huge it is, was a major part in me coming here, in addition to already knowing Muzza (Paul Murray).

“I just want to get started, helping the team get more wins and hopefully get us out of this league."

Latics had been looking to offload players before bringing anyone else in, but the club have instead taken the plunge on another key addition ahead of tonight's transfer deadline (11pm) for Football League and Premier League clubs.
