Micky Mellon dedicated Oldham Athletic's comfortable win at Maidenhead United to chairman Frank Rothwell and his family.

Rothwell this week completed the World's Toughest Row for a second time, breaking his own world record and so far raising almost £300,000 for Alzheimer's Research UK.

The 73-year-old is due back in Oldham this weekend, and plans to travel to York City on Tuesday for his first Latics game in almost three months.

And Mellon was delighted to mark the occasion with an important 3-1 win on the road - a result that kept Oldham in the National League play-off positions and stretched their unbeaten away run to seven games.

"I was lucky enough to speak to Frank yesterday and I know how delighted he'll be with that performance and that result, because that's what it's all about, for the family and the Oldham supporters," said Mellon, whose side was backed by more than 470 travelling fans.

"We played very well. I think over the course of 90-odd minutes we absolutely deserved the result, played some really good football, looked really controlled with and without the ball and it was a really good performance and superb backing from fantastic supporters, so it was a really good afternoon for us."

And the front two were on the scoresheet for the second game in a row, with Joe Garner giving Latics a 1-0 half-time lead, before Mike Fondop scored twice in the second half.

"Joe's everything that we've needed, that bit of experience, the players can rely on him, you know what you're going to get. He never lets you down, he keeps going and going and going, unbelievable energy and everyone sees the reasons why we were so delighted to get him here.

"And Mike's a great lad and a brilliant character, you've just got to keep on him all the time, keep everyone else on him, and you know that he's a handful if you stay on him, and he'll perform like that for you.

"We're delighted with him, as we are all the players. I thought all over the pitch we performed really well, it was a real group result because even the boys on the bench and the boys who were left out are all part of it, the staff, the supporters. We have a real good unity at the minute so it's a good place to be."

And apart from conceding late on, Mellon was impressed with some diligent defending, particularly at set pieces.

"Over the course of this season they (Maidenhead) have the best set piece delivery that we've come up against and we defended it very well," he said.

"I lost count of how many free kicks the referee gave, which is very disappointing because I don't think everything's a free kick, every bit of contact's not a foul. And then you're having to defend that and they have great delivery. But we stood up to it and we defended it really well, and scored some good goals.

"We're disappointed we didn't get the clean sheet, which is great to know because they have high standards and we'll keep driving that.

"We'll enjoy this evening but our attention will be quickly turned around to York on Tuesday night."
