Oldham boxer Will ‘The Ghost’ Cawley is determined to prove that he is the best British fighter at bantamweight before moving on to European and even world titles in 2025, writes James Bovington.

“I’ve got a new drive with fire in my belly at each training session,” said Cawley, “And you’ll see me prove just what I’m capable of in my next bout on Manchester promoter Gary Booth’s show on March 1 with regional title shots coming soon after.”

This will be 26-year-old Cawley’s fourth professional bout since his joining the paid ranks late in 2021. His most recent match last June saw him beat Tanzanian boxer John Chuwa by first round stoppage and is currently ranked eighth out of 33 UK professionals and 175th in the world at his weight according to the international boxing database BoxRec.

“I won 77 of my 88 amateur contests,” explained Cawley, “With the highlight being my victory in the Elite English Championship in 2016 when I was just eighteen.

“I then got a place in the Great Britain Olympic Podium team for five years and winning a bronze and silver medal European championships.”

Aaron McLeish trains Cawley at the London Fight Academy having lived in the capital since turning professional.

“I’m convinced that he’s on track to fight for a world championship,” said McLeish, “And I’m delighted with his progress, as is his manager Mo Prior.’

“I’m lucky to be able to train full time thanks to generous sponsorship from Wonderlust Bakery at home in Oldham. I’m also grateful to my brother Martin for his assistance and encouragement as well as Touch Tuina who looks after my physical welfare during fight preparation.

“I might not live in Oldham anymore but am determined to make my hometown proud.”
