ROUGHYEDS boss Sean Long felt his men made Sunday’s difficult for themselves in the second half, writes Kasey Smith.

After surging to a commanding 26-0 lead at half-time, Rochdale rallied, with the points scored in the second forty shared at 12-12.

With the game virtually already in the bag, Long believes his men didn’t stick to their values in attack.

“We started to score on every play and it was a bit frantic in the second half,” he admitted.

“Credit to Rochdale who came back and caused a bit of chaos in our defence – we did well to keep them to just 12 points.

“There’s some things to learn after that, going forward, and we’ve got to be better than that if we want to achieve things this year.”

Despite this, the Roughyeds boss was impressed with his side’s fighting spirit defensively, particularly Agoro’s challenge at the death to prevent a certain Rochdale try.

“Mo’s tackle was just outstanding – the game was done but he came from nowhere to chop somebody down.

“It’s effort based stuff and for him to fly across the line to do that shows the lads have got that in abundance.”

It was confirmed Oldham will be away to York in the quarter-finals, after the draw was made at the conclusion of Sunday’s game.

York – a side which boasts a swathe of former Super League talent, including Richie Myler, Jimmy Keinhorst and Will Dagger – pose a real threat, admitted the Roughyeds boss.

“It’s a very tough draw,” he said. “They’re a really good team, I’ve coached against them before with Featherstone and we’re going to have to be on our mettle to get through.

“If our discipline is poor like it was against Rochdale and we make that many errors – Saddleworth Rangers will give us a game.”
