Former Oldham Athletic manager Paul Scholes is among a group of ex-footballers visiting 17 clubs from Bradford to Liverpool as part of an event to raise funds and awareness for motor neurone disease (MND).

The Manchester United legend is one of 16 former pros taking on a 175-mile 'March of the Day', working in a continuous relay across three days, in aid of the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation.

The group will set off from Bradford City on Friday at 9am, with the aim of arriving at Anfield before 6pm on Sunday.

Boundary Park is one of the stop-off points, with the club opening its doors to welcome the walkers and offer refreshments and a pit stop at approximately 9.45pm on Friday, with the group then setting off for FC United at 10.10pm.

Leeds United, Manchester City, Manchester United and Everton are among some the other clubs taking part as host stages.

For the first part of the route up to Bolton, the walkers will wear blue t-shirts bearing the name of former Ipswich and Sunderland striker Marcus Stewart, who was diagnosed with MND two years ago.

From Bolton onwards the walkers will change into red t-shirts with former Bradford and Bolton defender Darby's name on the back.

Darby, who has been living with MND for the last five years, said: “March of the Day has received a huge amount of support. It has brought together people, fans and football clubs and ex-football players and managers who are all supporting the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation and MND community.

“The response has been incredible and it’s sure to be a very special weekend for everyone taking part. The support and generosity from everyone involved is overwhelming. The support means the world to the Foundation.

“When those who are diagnosed with MND see people showing their support through events like this one, it gives us the strength to keep fighting daily. Together, we can make a positive impact on MND and hopefully one day we will see a cure for this disease.”
