Waterhead Warriors are inviting players to join its growing girls section.

The Oldham club is looking to recruit more girls in school years six, seven and eight but if there is enough interest further teams can be added.

The club which was established more than 100 years ago, embarked to create history in 2021 by forming the first ever Girls Rugby League team in Oldham.

A number of coaches who’s daughters played mixed gender Rugby League decided to try and set up a girls only Rugby League team at Waterhead.

Girls can only play in mixed gender Rugby League up to the age of Under 11s, at that point, unless there is a dedicated Girls section, the girls tend to move on from the sport or join a team outside the town.

Now the dedicated Waterhead teams are made up of not only Waterhead girls, but girls who played their junior rugby at other rugby clubs in the town.

That first training session more than 30 girls of various ages up to 16-years-old turned up to training and the numbers steadily grew as the weeks passed.

In 2023, the club had enough girls at age under 12s to put a team together and enter a league to start playing competitive matches. At the end of 2023, enough girls were signed on at the club to form two teams for the 2024 season at ages Under 12s and Under 13s.

Now the girls compete against teams from Yorkshire and Lancashire in weekly fixtures and are holding their own against some well established teams.

The club is holding a girls open development morning on Saturday, June 1 which is free of charge.

It is also hosting an under 12s carnival on June 22 which will be attended by four or five other clubs from Yorkshire and the north west
