ROUGHYEDS have completed a key part of transfer business with the acquisition of Super League prop Gil Dudson on a two-year deal, writes Kasey Smith.
The Welsh International will join up with the squad when his current loan with Salford Red Devils expires.
The 34-year-old, who joins from Warrington, becomes the first signing ahead of the 2025 season where head coach Sean Long is targeting a push for the play-offs.
“I'm really excited,” said Dudson, after putting pen to paper. “Oldham have absolutely killed it this year by winning the league three or four games early.
“I'm really looking forward to the move and getting involved with all the lads.
“I had opportunities to stay (in Super League) but once I had met with (managing director) Mike Ford and Longy (head coach Sean Long) they sold me the vision on Oldham.
“There was something that excited me about the opportunity of coming down and helping grow and build something in this journey that they want to go on – I want to be a part of that."
The Welsh International brings a wealth of experience to Boundary Park having made over 250 appearances playing for Super League sides.
Dudson is best remembered for his role in Wigan’s Super League and Challenge Cup double in 2013 where he made 24 appearances.
He also reached the Grand Final and Challenge Cup Final again with Salford in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
The Cardiff-born forward started his career with Celtic Crusaders before securing a move with Wigan Warriors. He also spent four seasons with Widnes and two with Catalans Dragons.
Adding to his extensive career CV, he has also represented his country Wales on 18 occasions.
Dudson gave an insight into what he will bring to the Roughyeds pack, “I'll bring hard-nosed rugby,” he explained.
“That's the way I have played my whole career. Honest, tough, hard-working and some leadership to bring some of the best out of the younger middles. I'm really looking to that mentor-type role.”
Dudson was named the Salford Players’ Player and Backroom Team Player of the Year for his efforts in the 2019 season.
