Micky Mellon welcomed a win at Woking that ended a run of 1-1 draws, but said he felt his side had played better in that spate of stalemates without as much to show for it.

Josh Lundstram scored his first Oldham Athletic goal, heading in Mark Kitching's cross in the 12th minute, and it remained 1-0 at the break.

Latics switched to a 4-4-2 at the break, with James Norwood replacing Dan Gardner after the midfielder had suffered a knock in a poor challenge late in the first half.

And it was 2-0 inside three minutes, with Tunji Akinola getting an own goal against his name, but Norwood made certain that it hit the back of the net after Akinola failed to deal with a Reagan Ogle long throw and diverted it past his own keeper.

A 30-yard wonder goal from Charley Kendall reduced the deficit in the 76th minute.

But their celebrations were quashed inside 60 seconds as Mike Fondop restored the two-goal cushion with his third of the season.

Joe Garner was introduced for his first appearance of 2024/25 following injury and he linked well with Norwood, who was among a number of players who could have added to the scoreline in Surrey.

"I think we've played better and not won, but we did enough to win the game and created enough chances to win any game really," said manager Mellon.

"But it was a much-needed win, and I think maybe sometimes - I've been a player myself and you know you just need to get over the line and get that victory.

"We'll pass it better than we did today, but the important thing is that win.

"I really appreciate the supporters who have travelled all the way down here to support us as well.

"It was just important that we just got the victory and we did that, but I would be the first to say we have played much better and not got something. But maybe that says something about what we are, maybe we can dig in and find that victory at times as well.

"I certainly felt we comfortably had four chances that we believe could have added to the scoreline, but we're delighted with the victory."
