Micky Mellon was frustrated with Latics’ defending at Maidenhead United but hailed his side’s character to fight back and claim a point on the road.

Mellon was delighted that the travelling supporters were rewarded with Charlie Raglan’s equaliser 10 minutes from time.

"I was disappointed for the defending for the two goals, one-v-one moments that we need to do better in,” he said.

“But to be fair to the lads, they have got a goal at a good time. We have gone it at half-time and we know that we are back in it again.

"I thought (Maidenhead) worked extremely hard, they worked their socks off. But I don't think I have been in a game where I've seen so many crosses go into the 18-yard box, and I mean good ones.

"We have to get on the end of them, we have to do more. We have hit the bar, we have hit the post.

“So in terms of fight and all those qualities that you're going to need in a long season in the National League - the travelling and all the rest of it - we really gave it a right good go.

“And I was pleased for the amount of supporters that were here, which was fantastic, that we got ourselves to at least level because they deserved that, and we deserved it as a team anyway.”

It was a quick turnaround from Saturday’s victory at Sutton United, but Mellon didn’t think there was a drop-off in performance levels.

"Sometimes it is strange, you think, 'We are doing okay here’. But football is about one-v-one moments and we were poor in two of them and got punished,” Mellon continued.

"I thought we were playing fine, picked it up from Sutton at the weekend and looked really strong and powerful again.

“I always felt there would be goals in us. I was just desperate to get one before half-time, which we did, which gave us that momentum going into the second half.

"Then we had the opportunity, we have hit the post, to make it 2-2 really early in the second half, with the momentum all with us.

"But eventually we got what we deserved after numerous - I don't know how many - corners we had as well.”

Latics have now lost one of their last 11 league games and currently sit sixth in the table, only behind Rochdale and Gateshead on goal difference.

"Often you stand here and say, 'We got into good areas but the quality had to be better'. Not today,” said the manager.

“The quality from (Mark) Kitching and (Jake) Caprice when he came on was absolutely magnificent.

“Some really shaped, brilliant crosses into the box that you just thought, 'Somebody has got to get on the end of one of these at some stage'.

"Maybe you have got to give Maidenhead a bit of credit, I thought their centre half defended well. But I think the volume of balls that have gone in there, you have got to expect at least we get on some more of them.

“But they gave everything. Two tough away games, really far away, and to pick up four points from two of them you would say ‘fair play’.

“We obviously came for another three points but you take what you get sometimes.”
