Shrewsbury Town's Tommy McDermott was delighted to make a goalscoring return to former club Oldham Athletic, but was frustrated that it wasn't the winner.

The attacking midfielder struck his first Football League goal in the first minute of stoppage time to put the Shrews 2-1 up against Latics at Boundary Park, where he spent time as a youngster.

McDermott had a spell with the club's academy before being released as young teenager.

So it was with a sense of double personal delight that he got off the mark.

But he said conceding in the 95th minute and having to settle for a late point knocked the gloss of a goalscoring return to his old club.

"I was about 12/13 when I was at Oldham," revealed the 20-year-old, who joined Shrewsbury on loan from Burnley in August.

"It was a long time ago but it's always nice to show what can become of your self belief, because I was playing grassroots four or five years ago after I got released from Oldham.

"So it's a proud moment for myself to showcase what I've become through self belief and hard work.

"It was my first league goal. As much as I'd like to make it about me we needed to see the game out and get the three points.

"We all thought we'd won the game, scoring in the 90th minute - one of the best feelings of my life - and then we go and concede and it's a disappointing feeling.

"I think it would be selfish of me to speak about my goal when there are three points on the line and that's what we needed.

"It's a good feeling, I'm glad to get my first league goal, but I'll be back in working hard on Monday.

"Obviously it hurts us conceding late."
