OLDHAM Athletic are understood to be interested in Rangers youngster Josh McPake, but face competition from a number of teams in League One and Two, as well as north of the border.

The 19-year-old winger impressed during his loan spell with Harrogate Town in League Two during the second half of last season, including an eye catching performance against Oldham in March, despite a 3-0 win for Keith Curle's side.

McPake appears to have left an impression on the Latics head coach, who is keen to keep an element of flair in the side alongside efforts to build a more resolute squad heading into the 2021/22 season.

But, according to the Press Association, Doncaster Rovers and League One newcomers Morecambe are also understood to be interested in McPake, who is likely to be allowed out on loan from Ibrox, having spent the first half of last season at Morton in the Scottish Championship.

Tranmere Rovers, who he scored his first Harrogate goal against, are also believed to be among McPake's suitors, as well as Graham Alexander's Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership.

The Scotland Under 21 international made 23 appearances for Harrogate after joining in January, helping them finish 17th - one place above Latics - in League Two, as well as picking up a winners' medal in the FA Trophy.

Harrogate's 1-0 win over Concord Rangers was 2020’s delayed final, and saw Harrogate make history as they became the first EFL team to win non-league’s showpiece final.

McPake, who is out of contract at Rangers next summer, and is looking to continue his development with one eye on his future.

During his spell at Harrogate, he said: “I’ve got a year left on my contract at Rangers and coming down to England has been a great experience but also exposed me to a new market as clubs are always watching the games in League Two.

“Rangers have kept a close eye on me and I really appreciate it. It’s good to know they are still looking after me so I will be back in for pre-season and I’m sure we will have some conversations about the future. They’ve told me to keep doing what I’m doing.

“I have definitely grown as a person during this loan spell. This is the first time I have moved away from home so this experience has helped me a lot.

"I have enjoyed the physicality and speed of the game down here, it suits my game and the move has worked out really well.

“I have played every game almost the full 90 minutes on the left wing since I came here.

"I think that is my natural position now, cutting in from the left on to my right foot and using my skills to create chances and I have scored a few goals which has been great.”

Speaking to Rangers' official website, McPake added: “The standard of football has been really good and there are a lot of good players in this league. Playing regular competitive games has been important and I was ready to go on loan. It has definitely been the right decision.

“My team-mates really helped me settle when I first joined and there are some good players here. Guys like striker Jon Stead have played in the English Premier League and he has helped me with my finishing."
