MATTHEW Lund said he picked "the best time to score" to give Salford City the edge over Oldham Athletic on derby day.

The 31-year-old made it two goals in as many games when he popped up at the far post to head past Jayson Leutwiler on the stroke of half-time.

Lund said Salford had been forced to withstand pressure from managerless Latics.

But a late first-half opener set the Ammies up nicely for the remainder of the game.

Lund, who returned to the line-up after missing Tuesday night's comeback draw at home to Bristol Rovers - a game Salford ended with nine men, said: "Tuesday was a massive point for us, coming from behind in the circumstances that we did, but (Saturday) was brilliant, a different game with the conditions, and having to deal with pressure at times, but to score off two set pieces was massive for us.

“I’ve always thought I could score goals, try and get into the box. I’ve said to the Gaffer before I want to try and score more than I have done this season, and I’ve had chances and just not taken that at times, but it’s good to see I’ve popped up with a couple in the last couple of games and I’ve got to add to that.

“It was a good time to score, I think the game was quite edgy at the time so it was probably the best time to score, to go in at half time 1-0 up was massive for us."

Salford boss Gary Bowyer, whose side are unbeaten in November, added: “It was terrible conditions for both teams so it was very difficult to get the ball down and play.

“I think the spirit that we showed the other night, going down to nine men and getting the draw, carried over.

“I’m delight with the three points and to end the week with seven points out of nine is fantastic.

“It was a great time to score right on half-time.

“Lundy has this fantastic ability, and it is an ability, to get in at the right time.”
