Louis Potts crowned another superb individual performance with the winning goal as Avro recorded an excellent 3-2 victory against high-flying Skelmersdale United at the Vestacare Stadium to move up to fourth in the table, writes Liam Bambridge.

Boss Alex Frost made just one change to the side which had started the previous Saturday’s disappointing defeat at Irlam. Lewis Lacy started at the back alongside Steve Mason in place of Sam Rathbone, with young midfielder Kofi Moore making his first appearance on the bench since signing on loan from Oldham Athletic.

The game started in difficult conditions which became unplayable after just six minutes, causing a ten minute delay while players initially huddled in the dugouts before returning briefly to their respective dressing rooms.

When the match restarted, it was Avro who seemed less affected by the interruption, and they quickly found themselves two goals in front.

Jack Morrow fired in a long range effort which evaded visiting keeper Ben Barnes to open the scoring, and just four minutes later, the young midfielder’s cross to the far post evaded everyone and found the bottom corner to double his side’s lead.

The home side might even have added to their tally by the half hour mark, but Barnes made a fine save to deny Kyle Jacobs, and an even better stop to tip Potts’ low drive onto his right hand post and to safety.

However, the visitors then rallied and were level by the break, courtesy of Michael Howard’s brilliant free kick and a neat turn and finish by Elliot Morris.

The second half began with Skelmersdale initially in the ascendancy, but just five minutes after the restart, Potts ran on to a long clearance from keeper Jordan Latham, held off a defender and finished clinically from the edge of the area.

Second half substitute Michael Afuye proved to be a constant thorn in the visiting defence’s side, and his pace and trickery created another opportunity which Barnes did well to keep out low to his left. Meanwhile at the other end Latham was largely untroubled thanks to a resilient and well-organised defensive display.

The win moves Avro up to fourth in the table ahead of the visit of AFC Liverpool to the Vestacare Stadium tomorrow afternoon, before another home game and arguably the biggest in their history next Wednesday night, the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup semi final against neighbours Ashton United.
